Abstract

The work of bishop Sergius (Golubtsov) (1906-1982), which the A. is publishing for the first time, examines the means of expression of the byzantine iconographical style. Bishop Sergius contrasts this with the more recent realistic tendencies of Church art. In this work, he acknowledges the byzantine iconographical style as the best means of expression of Christian truths. His work also looks at the history of the realistic transition in church art and its appropriateness for Orthodoxy as a means of expression accessible to the modern church mentality.
