The present investigation undertakes, for the first time, a comparative analysis of the compendium «Amphilochia» by Saint Photius, Patriarch of Constantinople (ninth century), and the «Questions on the Octateuch» by Blessed Theodoret of Cyrrhus (c. 386/393 - c. 457) to ascertain the extent of the former’s reliance upon the Antiochene theologian, while also examining convergences and divergences in their exegetical approaches. To accomplish these objectives, a multifaceted inquiry is conducted across several dimensions. Firstly, the study explores how Saint Photius of Constantinople appropriates the concepts of Blessed Theodoret of Cyrrhus in the «Amphilochia», and, from a philological standpoint, how he constructs his argumentation through the condensation and elaboration of interpretive methodologies. Secondly, the degree and character of the saint’s originality are assessed. Thirdly, the primary source underpinning the interpretations of the Constantinopolitan patriarch is delineated. Consequently, the author concludes that Saint Photius, in his exegesis of challenging scriptural passages, eschews uncritical adherence to the bishop of Cyrrhus; rather, the «Amphilochia» evinces elements of autonomy alongside manifestations of eclecticism and compilation.
