Abstract

This book is a collection of articles presented as papers at the Third Symposium on the Study of the Syriac Bible (Peshitta) in 2001. The symposium was organized by the Peshitta Institute, whose main task since the 1950s has been to prepare a critical edition of the Peshitta text of the Old Testament. With the project nearing its completion (only a few biblical books remain unpublished), a new line of work was started by the Institute, which is to study the reception of the Peshitta in Syriac patristic and exegetical literature, with the aim of presenting as accurately as possible the historical context of the Syriac Bible's usage.
