St Cyril of Alexandria’s Defence of the Expression ‘One Nature of God the Logos incarnate’ from the Point of View of the 5th–8th c. Orthodox Christian Polemical Writers
Abstract
The two epistles of St Cyril of Alexandria to Succlesius, Bishop of Dioceses, were prominent in the era of Christological controversy. This was due not only to their unquestionable merits, and they are among the most significant dogmatic Epistles of St Cyril of Alexandria, but also to the fact that some expressions used here were ambiguously interpreted in the polemics of supporters and opponents of the Council of Chalcedon IV. First of all, it concerns the expression "one nature of God the Word incarnate", the doctrinal merit of which the saint resolutely defends in the second of these epistles, offering his own interpretation of this famous Christological formula.
