Abstract

On a clear autumn morning on September 15, 2009 the ringing of the great Lavra Bell heralded the departure from God of one of the oldest residents of the Sergiev Posad Monastery, the preceptors and students of the Moscow Theological Schools, the neighbouring Sergiev Posad residents and pilgrims who had come to Lavra, the permanent precentor of the renowned Lavra choir, professor emeritus of liturgics of the Moscow Theological Academy, known throughout Orthodox Russia as a master of precentor art and teacher of church singing, Archimandrite Matthew (Mormyl).
