Abstract

The book is an album edition of Theophanes the Greek's frescoes in the Church of the Saviour at Ilyin Street, undertaken by the Novgorod Museum-Reserve with the support of Mikhail Abramov Charitable Foundation "Private Museum of Russian Icons". The author is T.Yu. Tsarevskaya, Doctor of Art History, author of numerous works on Novgorod monumental painting, including fundamental monograph "The Painting of the Church of Theodore Stratilat on Ruche in Novgorod and Its Place in the Art of Byzantium and Rus of the Second Half of the XIVth Century. The book provides a new perspective on this unique and outstanding ensemble of monumental painting, which equally belongs to Old Russian and Byzantine art, and is the only authentic work by Theophanes the Greek, who painted the church in 1378.
