Is God Being or is God Without Being? Discussion in Modern Theology: J. Milbank Versus J.-L. Marion

The article analyzes the discussion in modern Western theology about the permissibility of describing God using the category «Being». The publication uses the methods of historical-philosophical research, the comparative method, the method of contextual reading. In the first part of the article, the author examines the teaching «God without Being» by J. L. Marion, identifies the philosophical context and the theological foundations on which this concept is based. In the second part of the article, the author analyzes the concept of J. Milbank, who criticizes J.-L. Marion and claims that «God is Being». The author points out that J. Milbank’s concern with the «question of being» is connected with the influence of the theology of H. U. von Balthazar on him, which, in turn, was formed not without the influence of the philosophy of M. Heidegger. The author shows that both approaches to the description of God are acceptable, and their difference is due to the difference in languages and coordinate systems from which they originate. The God of J.-L. Marion is a God without a «heidegger’s Being», and the God of J. Milbank is a God with a «non-heidegger’s Being».
