Two Vectors of Scientific Atheismʼs Transformation in Its Relation to Russian Orthodoxy in the Late 1980s

The article is devoted to the analysis of archival materials and publications reflecting the complex picture of the transformation of the ideology of scientific atheism at the end of the Soviet era. These processes were associated with the return of the Russian Orthodox Church to the public space of late Soviet society as a significant factor in social development. The opinion about the withdrawal of scientific atheism from the historical arena in connection with the collapse of the ideological system of the USSR has become entrenched in historiography. However, an appeal to sources shows that the ideologists of scientific atheism actively reflected on the changing conditions of public discourse about religion. As a result, two approaches to Russian Orthodoxy have been formulated within the framework of scientific atheism. The first was implemented by theoretical ideologists in the context of a concept called «scientific worldview». Its essence was the recognition of the importance of Orthodoxy as a factor of social development and the reception of its meanings and ideas in a reduced form as an element of secular humanistic ideology. The second approach involved interaction with the church community within the framework of a scientific atheistic paradigm that cuts off the transcendent content of the faith and focuses on cultural and ethical meanings.
