Michael Psellos’ Reception of Plato’s Theory of Ideas in the Treatise De omnifaria doctrina

The article examines Michael Psellos’ interpretation of Plato’s theory of ideas in the treatise «De omnifaria doctrina» (Gr. «Διδασκαλία Παντοδαπή»). Based on an analysis of the chapter «On Ideas», the author demonstrates that the Byzantine scholar Michael Psellos relied on Ps.-Plutarch’s work «Placita Philosophorum», deliberately reworking it to integrate Platonism into Christian theology. Using a comparative method, the study explores the texts of Psellos, Ps.-Plutarch, Plato, and Aristotle. The author concludes that Michael Psellos consciously modified the tenets of Platonic doctrine in an effort to present it as consistent with the Christian worldview.
