Biblical Sources of the Holy Week Canons by St. Andrew of Crete and St. Cosmas of Maiuma

The purpose of this article is to identify the biblical sources for the Holy Week canons of St. Andrew of Crete and St. Cosmas of Maiuma found in the modern Lenten Triodion. The primary research method is comparative analysis. The author compares the content of the troparia of these canons with the lections prescribed for Holy Week in the Jerusalem Lectionary and the Typikon of the Great Church. Based on this comparison, it is concluded that St. Cosmas drew upon the readings of the Jerusalem Lectionary. At the same time, St. Andrew’s citations of Holy Scripture indicate that he also generally followed the Jerusalem Lectionary and composed his Holy Week cycle either during his residence in Jerusalem or as part of the 'Hagiopolite' community in the Byzantine capital. Furthermore, it remains possible that St. Andrew relied on the pre‑iconoclastic Constantinopolitan Lectionary, which may have been similar in content to the Jerusalem one. This latter hypothesis is supported by specific biblical quotations that align with the works of St. Romanos the Melodist and the Typikon of the Great Church.
