The Image of the Church as a Lioness in the Exegesis of St. Gregory the Great: Sources and Theological Content

The article examines the use of the lioness imagery by St. Gregory the Great in an ecclesiological context. To provide a broader perspective, a brief overview of the lioness image in ancient and early Christian literature is presented, comparing the interpretations of St. Gregory with those of his predecessors. The author highlights key theological themes revealed through the image of the lioness: the connection between Christology and ecclesiology, Anti‑Jewish polemics, and the theme of primacy. By analyzing specific exegetical examples, the author demonstrates how innovation and continuity were combined in the works of the Holy Hierarch and what role the use of the lioness imagery played in St. Gregory's theological and hermeneutic strategy.
