Iconographic Features of the «Christ on the Couch of Solomon» Miniature in the Manuscripts of James of Kokkinobaphos

The article examines the interaction between text and illustrations in the manuscripts of the homilies by James Kokkinobaphos. It traces the introduction of the imagery of the «threescore valiant men of the valiant of Israel» from Solomon’s Song of Songs into the miniatures. The author provides various epithets related to the Marian prefigurations. The study reveals the content of the exegetical text explaining the miniature of Christ on the Couch of Solomon, surrounded by the sixty valiant men. A comparison is drawn between the interpretations of the corresponding verse of the Song of Songs by the Church Fathers and by the monk James. Based on both the text and the iconography of the «sixty valiant men», an attempt is made to uncover its theological significance. The article also compares the miniatures of the two known copies of the homilies. In conclusion, the author discusses the possible reasons for James’s use of this rare Marian prefiguration as the basis for a unique illustrative cycle.
