The Ursinian Schism as a Challenge to the Apostolic Succession of the Episcopate in the Roman Church

This paper, using the material of the local schism in the Roman Church during the second half of the 4th century, examines the main conditions for the implementation of episcopal succession in Late Antiquity. The events that led to the division of the Roman Christian community are reconstructed using the example of the Ursine Schism, and the reasons for the election of Deacon Damasus to the See of Rome are analyzed. The study is based on an analysis of a wide range of sources, including the works of church historians Socrates, Sozomen, the blessed Theodoret, and Philostorgius, imperial constitutions from the Collectio Avellana, testimonies from Ammianus Marcellinus, letters and epigrams of Pope Damasus, as well as the decrees of Italian councils. As a result, three key conditions for episcopal succession are identified: the consensual election of a candidate by the clergy and laity; ordination involving neighboring bishops and inclusion in the college of bishops; recognition (reception) of the ordination by the episcopate of the Universal Church and state authorities.
