The third article of the series devoted to St. Peter Damascene’s gnoseology starts with the study of the structure of mystico-gnoseological ascent and is devoted to two aspects of the relation between human cognition and God, namely onto-gnoseology and theological status of the highest type of cognition, i. e. spiritual contemplation. The first aspect is revealed when studying St. Peter’s exegetical methodology which, in his teaching, turns out to be not just a way of interpreting sacred texts, but also a way of cognition of the created world in the metaphysical foundations of its being - Divine logoi («intentions»), determining the emergence (creation), existence, and purpose of the objects of the visible and invisible world. This view of ontology makes the world and its cognition a means of ascending to God and cognition of God and explains why the main path to acquiring knowledge is revelation. This is precisely related to the second question considered in this article: about the nature and origin of mystical contemplations. Here, this question is being examined so far from the most general and fundamental perspective.
