Abstract

This article attempts to identify the addressee of Eusebius of Caesarea’s «Ecclesiastical History». The point is that this work underwent several revisions during the author’s lifetime, which makes the subject matter and narrative character of the last three books very different from the previous ones. In spite of the fact that the last book of this work mentions the addressee, namely Bishop Paulinus of Tyre, one cannot help but find in the text itself other readers on whom Eusebius orientated himself. Through philological and content analysis of the text of the Ecclesiastical History, the author identifies the relationship between the evolution of the reader and the changing nature of the historical narrative in the work of Eusebius of Caesarea.
