Abstract

This article is an overview of modern scientific methods in the framework of biblical research. The author’s attention is focused on the literary approach to the text of the Holy Scripture and, first of all, on such a variety of it as narrative analysis. The author attempts to classify approaches to the biblical text. This classification is based on R. Jacobson's communicative model, on the axis of representation of which historical methods are located, on the axis of communication — literary ones. In turn, the basic elements of the communicative triad help to differentiate literary approaches: «author», «text», «reader». Taking into account the focus of researchers on one or another component, objective approaches (structuralism) and pragmatic approaches (rhetorical analysis and criticism of the reader’s response) are distinguished. Due to its methodological principles, narrative analysis occupies a middle position between these approaches: given its interest in the narrative structures of the text, it can be considered an objective method, given its interest in the image of the implied reader, a pragmatic method.
