Abstract

This article examines the statements of the American biblical scholar Bart Ehrman about the length of the period between the earthly life of Jesus Christ and the time when the canonical Gospels were written. At the beginning of the article, a review is given of the opinions of scientists who addressed the question of the existence of a long period of oral transmission of the gospel teaching. The following are the opinions of researchers who oppose the existence of an oral period before the writing of the Gospels. Then an assessment is given of the arguments that arise when referring to the cultural background of the Greco-Roman world. As a result of the analysis of the cultural environment of the Greco-Roman world, in the light of the question of the origin of the canonical Gospels, the groundlessness of Bart Ehrman’s position regarding the duration of the oral transmission of the Gospel tradition was shown.
