Abstract

The article examines the hypothesis of the German scholar Martin Noth about

the peaceful and gradual entry of the Israelites into Canaan, which opposes the biblical narrative of a military conquest. The author analyzes modern archaeological data from the excavation of three key cities — Jericho, Gai, and Asor — to test both perspectives. Based on the discovery of pottery, scarabs, traces of fires, destruction, and fortifications, it is concluded that the archaeological evidence supports the biblical version of a large-scale military invasion of Canaan by the Israelites around the 15th and 14th centuries BCE, and refutes the Noth hypothesis.
