The Development of Saint John of Kronstadt’s Concept of Social Service: Based on the Diaries of 1856–1866

Abstract

A special place in the history of the development of the Russian Orthodox Church  in the middle of the 19th — early 20th centuries is occupied by the figure of the Saint Righteous  John of Kronstadt. The personality of this saint for his time is a unique example of personal piety and selfless service to others. Father John, within the framework of his moral writings, speaks of arranging life in accordance with the way of life of Christ, the unceasing spiritual struggle against sinful passions and vices. Father John confirmed the truth of this moral teaching by his own life, by the feat of pastoral and general Christian work.
