The Language Situation in Russia under Archbishop Feofan (Prokopovich)

Abstract

The Russian language has been developing for many centuries. There are a considerable number of theories, often contradicting each other, about its development. Many researchers tend to talk about the long existence of bilingualism, others understand this term somewhat differently, emphasizing the close proximity of the book and spoken languages. And, since the study of the development of the Russian language will not stop at existing works, disagreements are likely to be present in the scientific community on this issue for a long time.
This article presents a general overview of the changes in the language and the literature that is inextricably transformed with it that were outlined by the beginning of the 18th century in Russia. First of all, the attitude to the language itself, language processes, grammatical and lexical features of the times of such an outstanding church figure as Archbishop Feofan (Prokopovich) are considered.
