Abstract

The article describes the historical and religious aspects of marriage and divorce, as well as the role of monasticism in this process. The Church has always been strict about marriage issues, as they are linked to the moral norms of society. Monasticism, which emerged in the 3rd century, played a key role in shaping Christian values, including the vow of celibacy. The vow of celibacy distinguishes monks who renounce worldly and family life for a life in Christ. In Roman society, marriage was considered the foundation of society, but gradually became profane, especially because of legal restrictions and vested interests. Many young Christians, resisting worldly norms, chose monasticism as a form of protest and spiritual search. Various church councils, such as Ancyra and Trulla, debated the issues of virginity and celibacy. Strict rules and epithymies were established for vow breakers, reaffirming the importance of keeping monastic vows. These vows, especially the vow of celibacy, remain an insurmountable obstacle to marriage, since they are taken for life and are governed by ecclesiastical law. These canonical rulings are discussed at length in this article.
