An Analysis of the State of «Out of Mind» in the 14th Rule of Timothy of Alexandria

In this work, the term "outside the mind" (ἐκφρενής) used in the 14th canon of St. Timothy of Alexandria, is analyzed. The decision on whether a person who committed suicide was in a state of "out of mind" is made by the clergyman, who decides on the possibility of performing the rite of church burial of the suicide. To make a decision, the clergyman needs to determine exactly whether the deceased was in his right mind. The term "out of mind" is considered from a philological, legal, theological and psychiatric point of view.
