The article evaluates M. Y. Birkin's scholarly monograph "The Bishop in Westgothic Spain". It is based on the analysis of the works of Isidore of Seville, Europe's greatest thinker of the 7th century; in addition, the canons of several Spanish councils are used. The functions of the bishop in society and his role as pastor, teacher, and leader are analyzed separately. The monograph is distinguished by its serious work with Latin texts and the use of modern scientific methods, thanks to which the book can be considered a notable contribution to the study of early medieval Christian thought.
