The spiritual and musical culture of St. Petersburg of the late XIX — early XX century, on the one hand, was an important component of the multi-complex and dynamic musical life of the capital, on the other hand, it was an equally important part of the intensively developing spiritual and musical culture of the country. This is a time when rapid growth is characterized not only by new spiritual and musical art and related research, but also by newly formed structures in the field of regency singing education, concert and choral life and public organizations in the field of church choral singing. The composers of this period, on the one hand, inherit the tradition of the Court Singing Chapel, which declared itself in the last quarter of the XIX century. On the other hand, the boundaries of their creativity are expanding, as many of them are included in a new direction of search, formed at that time in the Alexander Nevsky Lavra and associated with the formation of the Russian style in sacred music.
