The entitlement of St. Sergius "of Radonezh" in the liturgical books of the Holy Trinity St. Sergius Lavra in the XV–XVI centuries

Abstract

There are many names of saints in the Russian Orthodox Church calendar. Among them, there are several called "of Radonezh". The most famous is St. Sergius, the founder of the Lavra in honor of the Holy Life-Giving Trinity. However, after his veneration and glorification, the saint was not called “of Radonezh”. That fact is proved by handwritten liturgical books, but, nowadays, it is impossible to imagine the opposite. This article is based on the rich collections of chants and prayers in honor of St. Sergius created at the Holy Trinity-Sergius Lavra in the XV–XVI centuries. As the research showed, the Reverend started to be called "of Radonezh" only in the XVI century.
