The Question of Historical and Liturgical Interpretation of Novella Solemnitas According to Its Description by the John Cassian

This paper considers the possibility of an ontological connection between the "new divine service" (novella solemnitas) of the Epistle to Castor, written by St John Cassian of Rome, and the modern Byzantine first hour on the basis of the data of modern liturgics and a review of the arguments presented in the discussion of this problem. Both the classical view of the obviousness of such a connection (Hannsens, Skaballanovic) and the progressive view of its unlikelihood (Taft, Bradshaw), initiated by Froger's theory, are examined.
