Activities of the Society for the Study of Church Law Named in Honor of T. V. Barsov (Barsov Society) of St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 2019–2022

Abstract

The article discusses the history of the creation and activities of the T. V. Barsov Society for the Study of Canon Law at the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy (Barsov Society). The society was initially established within the academy for the systematic study of church (canonical) law. It is shown that the foundation for the establishment of the society was laid both by regular publications on church law topics in academic scientific journals starting in 2018 and by scientific conferences on church law held since 2017. As of today, the society's research activities have been divided into four main directions: "Church Law and Ancient Rus" (coordinator — Dr. Phil. P. I. Haydenko), "Church Law: Theory and History" (coordinator — Dr. Jur. Y. V. Ospennikov), "Ecclesiastical Court: History and Modernity" (coordinator — Dr. Jur. A. A. Dorskaya), "Church Law and Culture" (coordinator — Cand. Jur. Y. V. Erokhina). It is also noted that there are several research directions that have not yet seen further development or are only in the early stages. The conclusion is drawn that the current research and educational activities of the Barsov Society provide a solid foundation for further in-depth work.
