The article proposes a translation of the «Alphabetical Chapters», a fairly recently published work attributed to St. Symeon the New Theologian. A detailed study of this work is not yet available, but acquaintance with the first three chapters can give a certain idea about the entire corpus of « Alphabetical Chapters». In addition to general remarks, each chapter is preceded by a brief discussion of the content and main features. According to the general style, this work is akin to the ascetic writing of St. Macarius of Egypt: conciseness, simplicity of syntax, frequent appeal to cause-and-effect relationships, and a simple lexicon. The system of thoughts, ideas very closely corresponds to the teachings of St. Symeon the New Theologian and even due to some circumstances of his biography.
