Abstract

Eduard Verhoef's monograph, "Philippi: How Christianity Began in Europe. The Epistle to the Philippians and the Excavations at Philippi," is an introduction to the archaeology of this ancient city, tracing the history of the polis from the time of St. Paul to 600 A.D. inclusive. The author is known for his publication of several articles on the history of Philippi, as well as his repeated visits to its archaeological excavations. At the same time, the book is intended for a general readership and does not claim to be a technical study of the archaeology of Philippi.
