The Place of G. K. Chesterton in the History of Christian Apologetic Thought

Abstract

The article examines the place and role of Gilbert Keith Chesterton in the history of Christian apologetic thought of the twentieth century. It analyzes the key factors of the English writer’s intellectual biography that influenced the formation of his distinctive apologetic method. Special attention is given to the characteristic features of Chesterton’s apologetic legacy: his perception of Christianity as a religion of joy, freedom, and truth; his unobtrusive proclamation of the Christian faith expressed in artistic and philosophical form; and his active use of logical argumentation and the principle of paradox. The article reveals the axiological content of Chesterton’s apologetics, as well as its orientation not toward any particular confessional tradition but toward Christianity as a whole. It concludes that the English thinker appears in the history of apologetics as a restorer seeking to cleanse Christian doctrine of archaic accretions and to make it relevant, meaningful, and attuned to the cultural and historical context of his era.
