Protopresbyter Alexander Shmeman's Catechetical Concept: Relationship to Tradition and Practical Applicability

Abstract

This article is timed to coincide with the centennial of the birth of the outstanding theologian, thinker, preacher, and pastor Protopresbyter Alexander Shmemann. The author offers a look at one of the chapters in the book of Father Alexander "By Water and Spirit" through the prism of the history of the catechism and in the contemporary context. The article compares Protopresbyter Alexander's views on the problem and history of catechesis with the testimonies of ancient sources and church authors.

Father Alexander was vividly interested in the theology and practice of the sacrament of Enlightenment because he considered the remembrance of Baptism to be a fundamental principle of Christian life in general. In his ministry as a pastor and seminary teacher, he tried not to diminish the significance of the problems associated with the practice of baptism of children and adults today. Thus Father Alexander raised the questions of the insufficiently reverent attitude toward Baptism in a Christian environment, the length of time required to prepare for the sacrament, and the profanation of the institution of godparents. Protopresbyter Alexander paid special attention to the theme of a radical change in the life of a convert to Christianity. Following the ancient forms of taking the Christian oath, he particularly pointed to the importance of the moment and the renunciation of Satan and the responsible reading of the Creed in the final stages of preparation.

In addition to presenting the views of Protopresbyter Alexander Schmemann, the present article also offers an attempt to make sense of the applicability of the ancient rules in the conditions of modern parish churches.
