The Moscow Theological Academy of the period of the First Russian Revolution in the diaries of L. A. Tikhomirov

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of L. A. Tikhomirov's diary entries about the events that took place at the Moscow Theological Academy during the First Russian Revolution. The source analysis of the diary allowed us to establish its features in relation to the description of events at the Academy. The author took notes daily, which allows you to accurately date the events that took place. The author of the diary received information about the state of affairs in the MDA from his son A. L. Tikhomirov. Since L. A. Tikhomirov belonged to the conservative camp, his assessments of the protest movement at the Academy are critical. The events at the Academy are described from the point of view of a smaller part of the teachers and students, namely, opponents of the strike and the granting of academic autonomy. The diary reveals the motivation of the opponents of the riots. It lies in the fear for spiritual education in the case of granting autonomy. From the point of view of the "opposition" to the riots, there are a large number of people in the Academy whose behavior and views do not correspond to the church ministry. Descriptions of the behavior of teachers and students during the strike are quite colorful. The author of the diary draws the characters of famous church scientists of his time: N. A. Zaozersky, N. F. Kaperev, P. V. Tikhomirov and others.
