The Testimony pf John the Baptist (John 3:22–36) in the Context of the Christology of the Gospel of John

In modern biblical studies, the Gospel of John is considered to be separate from the Synoptic Gospels, since it offers a special vision of Christ and Christianity. Despite its many distinctive features, the Gospel of John is consistent with the mainstream Christian narrative of Jesus as the Messiah and Son of God. John presents Jesus as the Messiah of Israel, who heals, teaches, dies and rises again. This article is devoted to a fragment of John 3:22–36, which is commonly referred to as the testimony of John the Baptist. It is a sermon of the Baptist, delivered in front of the disciples. The Forerunner’s speech, though short, is rich in its theological content. It contains the most important Christological leitmotifs of the Fourth Gospel. The analysis of this fragment concerns the topic of witness and Messianism in the Gospels, which is an extensive layer of New Testament theology. This article will show how a part of the Gospel can contain all the main Christological themes of the whole text.
