Abstract

This article is an attempt to determine the meaning of ἀναγωγή in the exegetical works of St. John Chrysostom. Some researchers believe that ἀναγωγή in the saint’s comments denotes a method of spiritual interpretation. Meanwhile, within the framework of the exegetical procedure, Chrysostom uses this word in a widespread metaphorical meaning and denotes the figurative meaning of the text in the broadest sense. The exegete does not use this word often. In most of his works, it does not occur at all. All this suggests that ἀναγωγή is not a technical term of the saint’s hermeneutics and does not name any method of spiritual interpretation.
