Church-Administrative Mechanisms and State Regulation: A Case Study of the Transport Issue in the Dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Belarusian SSR (1945–1950)

Abstract

This article investigates, through detailed case studies, the resolution of transportation issues within the Orthodox dioceses situated in the territory of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR). Particular attention is given to the 1950 controversy concerning the substitution of an "Opel Adam" automobile with a "Wanderer". This incident, associated with the activities of Bishop Sergius (Larin), exemplifies not merely the material and technical challenges of organising diocesan life in the aftermath of the Second World War but also illuminates the mechanisms of ecclesiastical administrative management and the strategies employed for interaction with Soviet authorities under prevailing ideological constraints. His Eminence Sergius leveraged this transport dispute with the Commissioner of the Council for the Affairs of the Russian Orthodox Church to pursue personal objectives: discrediting adversaries and consolidating his episcopal authority among the diocesan clergy and regional officials. The research utilises a multifaceted methodological framework, incorporating comparative-historical analysis, source criticism, and a hypothetico-deductive approach. This combination facilitates the formulation and rigorous testing of hypotheses concerning the motives underpinning the actions of ecclesiastical hierarchs. Such an integrated methodology not only enables the reconstruction of the sequence of events but also aids in uncovering the underlying mechanisms governing the interaction between religious institutions and state authorities within the context of the Soviet political system.
