The Pontificates of Romanus and Theodore II: The Solu- tion of the Formosian Problem

The article is devoted to the pontificates of the Roman popes Romanus and Theodore II. The former governed the Roman Church from August to September 897; the latter was the Pope for no longer than 20 days in December 897. Both popes belonged to the Formosian party; both aimed to rehabilitate the reposed (896) Pope Formosus who had been, nine months after his death, exhumed, put on trial and condemned by his successor, Pope Stephen VI. Having succeeded to Stephen, Romanus and Theodore acquitted Formosus.
