About the Journal
Dear readers of the Journal!
We are pleased to welcome you to the pages of the first issue of our magazine, which will be devoted to biblical studies. The name of the journal comes from the Greek word σχόλιον - small comments in the margins or between the lines of a manuscript. Scholia is the oldest form of commentary on texts and is intended primarily to clarify difficult passages. Since the primary aim of the Department of Biblical Studies is the study of Sacred Scripture, we can in one way or another view our publications as commentaries on New and Old Testament texts.
Another aspect of our journal's activity has to do with the origin of the word "scholia" - from the concept of "school commentary" (from the Greek σχολή, "school"). For us, school is not just a lecture building, but also a meeting place for teachers and students, a place of dialogue, a place of seeking the Truth and understanding of Tradition. Very significant for us, in this sense, is the notion of a "pulpit school", which should testify to both common scholarly interests and a systematically developed approach. The journal logically continues the tradition of the department's publication of the Proceedings of the Department of Biblical Studies at Moscow Theological Academy since 2013, but it also reflects a new level of scholarly discourse that is acceptable in the format of scholarly publications.
The articles in our journal are often revised versions of papers presented at conferences and seminars of the Department of Biblical Studies and other scholarly venues, reflecting the validation of some of the themes and ideas. For this reason, we welcome articles by faculty members from other departments, academic and research institutions to stimulate interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research.
The sections of our journal will deal with various aspects of biblical scholarship and will be supplemented as articles are received. The following sections are planned: New Testament Studies, Old Testament Studies, Biblical Theology, Biblical Apologetics, Modern Biblical Studies, Biblical Archaeology, Problems of Teaching Biblical Theological Disciplines, Sacred Theological Exegetics, Bible and Philosophy, Biblical Translations, Biblical Philology and others.
Interested authors are welcome to contribute to publications. E-mail contact can be made via biblejskijuniversitet@gmail.com with the subject line "Biblical Scholia".
